£245.00
A collectable hammered silver Groat of king Henry the Sixth, with an incurved pierced cross mint mark, struck at Calais between 1430 and 1431. Henry was still a child at this point. He was 10 years old in 1431 he was crowned King of France in Paris: a ceremony which made him the only English king coronated on both sides of the channel. Both sides of this coin show rosette and mascle stops in the legends which dates this issue. From the early part of Henry VI’s first reign, the obverse of this Groat shows a crowned facing bust of the king within a tressure of arcs. The obverse shows a long cross with three pellets in each quarter. The legend clearly identifies the Calais mint with the outer legend, translating as ‘I have made God our helper’. A nice example. Spink 1859.
