One of just 1,916 sets issued - this six coin silver proof £5 Crown collection is part of a series looking back on the First World War as we mark the centenary. This 2016 set looks back on the events of 1916, the third year of the conflict, with exclusive designs by a range of artists. It’s a collaboration between The Royal Mint and the Imperial War Museum. Most of these coins were only issued in sets like this one - you can’t find them available individually. Each of the coins is composed of 28.28 grams of .925 sterling silver and has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres. They’re all finished to proof standard. Included in this set are Crown coins celebrating Victoria Cross recipient Jack Cornwell (designed by David Cornell), the British Army (David Rowlands) and the poetry of the conflict (David Lawrence). Also featured are coins featuring the battleship HMS Dreadnaught (Edwina Ellis), the Battle of the Somme (July to November, John Bergdahl) and the naval engagement at Jutland (late May to early June, John Bergdahl). This is a fascinating and exclusive set. It’s offered in its original black velvet lined presentation box from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
