The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy
Few works of literature have captured the imagination quite like JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. First published between 1954 and 1955, Tolkien's epic tale of hobbits, wizards, and the struggle between good and evil created an entire mythology, complete with its own languages, histories and maps, that has enthralled readers for generations.
When Peter Jackson brought Middle-earth to the cinema screen in 2001, those stories reached an audience of hundreds of millions. The trilogy redefined what blockbuster filmmaking could achieve, blending groundbreaking visual effects with storytelling of genuine emotional depth. Beloved by fans worldwide and decorated with seventeen Academy Awards across the three films, The Lord of the Rings remains one of the greatest achievements in cinema history.
25th Anniversary Coin Collection
To mark a quarter of a century since The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring first arrived in cinemas, The Royal Mint has announced a landmark seven-coin collection of UK Fifty Pence coins celebrating The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
The series will unfold across three years, with each film in the trilogy receiving its own pair of commemorative coins as its anniversary falls. The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) is honoured first in 2026, followed by The Two Towers (2002) in 2027, and The Return of the King (2003) in 2028.
The collection opens with a special release dedicated to the object at the very heart of the story: the One Ring itself.
• The One Ring
The first 50p coin in the collection takes as its subject the most powerful and corrupting artefact in all of Middle-earth. Created in secret by the Dark Lord Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom, the One Ring was forged with a single, terrible purpose: to ensnare, corrupt and enslave all who come under its influence, bending them to Sauron's will as he seeks to dominate Middle-earth. It is the quest to destroy this Ring, carried by the hobbit Frodo Baggins and guarded by his eight companions, that drives the entire trilogy.
The 2026 coin, designed by Thomas T Docherty, depicts the One Ring in striking detail, with coloured editions rendered with glittering gold printing. Most remarkably, the reverse features an innovative caustic effect - a first for a UK commemorative coin - which projects the image of the Eye of Sauron when the coin catches the light. It is a fitting tribute to an object whose very nature is one of concealment and revelation.
'It’s a remarkable feat of British craftsmanship, and one that fans will have to see to believe. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a dedicated collector this is one coin you absolutely will want to own.
- Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint
Official UK Lord Of The Rings 50ps
This coin collection has been produced by The Royal Mint in partnership with Warner Bros and New Line Productions, with designs directly inspired by the imagery of Peter Jackson's films.
While other nations have released coins inspired by The Lord of the Rings, these are the first official UK Lord of the Rings coins. Each piece carries the definitive portrait of His Majesty King Charles III on the obverse, designed by sculptor Martin Jennings and accompanied by an inscription that reads 'CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 50 PENCE ·'. These coins are accompanied by bespoke packaging that explores the blockbuster film series.
The Lord of the Rings range follows The Royal Mint's 2023 Two Pound coin collection dedicated to JRR Tolkien, released fifty years after his passing. These 50ps join a distinguished line of UK coins celebrating beloved British literature, film and television - among them popular collections dedicated to Harry Potter, Beatrix Potter, Winnie the Pooh, The Gruffalo and Paddington Bear. The collection is sure to appeal to collectors of modern British commemorative coins and fans of Middle-earth.
