Harry Potter: 25 Years Of Magic Series
Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone, the first book in J K Rowling's best-selling children's fantasy series, was published in June 1997. 25 years on, the novels have been translated into 73 languages and adapted into a series of blockbuster films, continuing to capture the hearts of new fans, eager to explore Harry's magical world.
The Royal Mint is celebrating the world of the boy wizard with a range of licensed coins, created in partnership with Bloomsbury Publishing, The Blair Partnership and Warner Bros, Entertainment. The pieces in this extensive collection are the first official UK coins to feature characters from Harry Potter and represent a unique collecting opportunity.
25 Years of Magic will feature four designs, available in BUnc, silver and gold proof:
- 2022 Harry Potter
- 2022 Hogwarts Express
- 2023 Dumbledore
- 2023 Hogwarts School

Hogwarts Express Design By Jim Kay
The second release in the Harry Potter series features the Hogwarts Express, waiting at Platform 9 and 3/4s. The famous steam train transports Harry and his friends from London King's Cross to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, located in the highlands of Scotland.
The artist behind this design is Jim Kay who has created a range of fully-illustrated Harry Potter books for Bloomsbury. His whimsical work is inspired by extensive research and a close reading of the original stories. To perfect the appearance of the Hogwarts Express, Kay created a model then used DIY tester pots to create the finished painting. The design was adapted for coinage by Ffion Gwillim, a product designer at The Royal Mint.
The words 'HOGWARTS EXPRESS' feature at the top of the coin with '25 YEARS OF MAGIC' below.
Fifth And Final Portrait Of Elizabeth II
The first two coins in the 25 Years of Magic collection feature Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, despite being issued after her passing in September 2022. Introduced in 2015, Clark's profile shows Her Majesty wearing the Diamond Diadem, surrounded by a legend that reads 'ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D' followed by the denomination and the year (2022).
The Royal Mint will not cease striking Queen Elizabeth's portrait until January 2023, after which all new currency - including circulating and commemorative coins - will be issued with Martin Jenning's new effigy of King Charles III. This definitive royal portrait was unveiled in late 2022 and shows His Majesty facing left, the opposite direction to his mother.
Subsequent coins in the Harry Potter series will feature Jennings' portrait, meaning that the collection will straddle this fascinating period of coinage transition.
Limited Edition Official Harry Potter Coins
You can identify genuine Royal Mint Harry Potter coins via the special latent image, included on the reverse of each design. Depending on how you tilt the coin you'll either be able to see a lightning bolt (like Harry's scar) or a '25', denoting the anniversary of these immensely popular books.
We've found that coins inspired by great British children's books are among the most popular releases from The UK's national mint. Winnie the Pooh coins and Beatrix Potter 50ps remain favourites, attracting new audiences to the world of coin collecting.
All the coins in the range are being offered in limited numbers (just 100 for the sparkling 2oz gold pieces). As the gold and large silver Harry Potter coins have now sold out on The Royal Mint's website, we anticipate that buyers will soon snap up their remaining stock of Hogwarts Express pieces. We've still got some left but the opportunity to get hold of these coins is dwindling.

Steeped in more than 1,100 years of history, The Royal Mint supplies all of the United Kingdom's coinage as well as currency for nations around the world. Renown for craftsmanship and thoughtful design, The Royal Mint also produces commemorative coins, favoured by investors and collectors.
A Millennia of Minting
Founded in the reign of Alfred the Great, around the year 886, The Royal Mint was originally one of several mints which were centralised to London in 1279. For more than 800 years the Mint was based at the Tower of London before moving to Royal Mint Court where it remained until the 1960s.
The Royal Mint has always been on the forefront of economic, technical and artistic innovation. Its skilled craftsmen minted coins that would reach the far corners of the British Empire, establishing the image and reputation of Britain for all whose pockets they ended up in.
In 2010 The Royal Mint became a limited company owned by Her Majesty’s Treasury. In recent years the Mint has struck medals for the 2012 London Olympic Games and opened a visitor centre, The Royal Mint Experience, in Llantrisant, Wales: the current home of The Royal Mint.
Collecting and Investing
The Royal Mint's commemorative and bullion coins – often minted to mark important national events and anniversaries – are not intended for circulation. They might look like ordinary coins but they are generally worth much more, thanks to their scarcity, finish and composition.
Most commemorative coins produced by The Royal Mint are available in a range of striking standards including Gold Proof, Silver Proof, Brilliant Uncirculated and Bullion. Some are also available in collectors sets. Gold and Silver Proof coins are minted in small numbers, making them rare and desirable.
The Royal Mint's commemorative coins are both VAT-free and Capital Gains Tax (CGT) exempt, making them an attractive and valuable investment. Whether you are diversifying your investments or simply appreciate world-class design, commemorative coins from The Royal Mint are a great buy.
