Coming soon: Harry Potter coins from The Royal Mint!
The Royal Mint's 25 Years Of Magic Collection
2022 marks twenty-five years since the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: the first book in J K Rowling's seven-part fantasy series was published in June 1997.
The Harry Potter books are the best-selling series in history. They've been translated into 73 languages and adapted into a series of blockbuster films. Collectors can enjoy a whole range of official and unofficial merch but there's never been an official UK coin featuring The Boy Who Lived: until now.
To celebrate 25 Years of Magic, The Royal Mint will soon release an extensive collection of UK coinage featuring four designs inspired by the world of Harry Potter:
- Harry Potter - 'a depiction of Harry Potter with the inscription “HARRY POTTER 25 YEARS OF MAGIC”'
- Hogwarts Express - 'a depiction of the Hogwarts Express and the figure of Harry Potter with the inscription “HOGWARTS EXPRESS 25 YEARS OF MAGIC”'
- Albus Dumbledore - 'a depiction of Albus Dumbledore and the inscription “ALBUS DUMBLEDORE 25 YEARS OF MAGIC”'
- Hogwarts School - 'a depiction of Hogwarts School and the inscription “HOGWARTS 25 YEARS OF MAGIC”'

Who Will Design 2022 Harry Potter Coins?
At this point all we know is that there will be four magical reverses, adapted for the available denominations. Promotional material from The Royal Mint shows artwork by Jim Kay who has created recent illustrated editions of the Harry Potter books for Bloomsbury. Could it be Kay's magical artwork that appears on the coins or other talented British artists?
The Gazette proclamation makes clear that these coins will feature the standard portrait of Her Majesty the Queen to the obverse. Since 2015 this has been Jody Clark's fifth definitive effigy which shows Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The artist's initials will appear below and the denomination will be identified in the legend.
The packaging for these 25 Years of Magic coins will be Harry Potter themed too with printed boxes, booklets and display folders likely to feature exclusive imagery. We offer all our modern Royal Mint collectors coins in their original presentation packaging with numbered certificates of authenticity enclosed.
Are Royal Mint Harry Potter Coins Collectible?
Previous Royal Mint coins based on beloved children's books have proved incredible popular. The ongoing Beatrix Potter series appeals both to coin collectors and those with nostalgic memories of her Little Tales. We anticipate that the 25 Years of Magic collection will be a favourite with young people who've grown up with J K Rowling's stories.
Adding to the collectibility of these forthcoming Royal Mint coins is the fact that there are four different designs to collect.
Each is available in a range of metals and finishes meaning that there's something in this collection for every budget.
We don't know exact mintage figures for these coins yet but we can anticipate the gold proof editions being available in very limited numbers. The 5oz silver coin will provide the largest canvas for the reverse designs, allowing owners to appreciate the original Harry Potter inspired artwork to its best advantage. If you're serious about Fifty Pence pieces though you'll want to look out for the brilliant uncirculated coins.
Where Can I Buy A 2022 Harry Potter Coin?
We don't have a release date yet for the 25 Years of Magic range. The first Harry Potter book was published on 7 June 1997 but since we're past that anniversary we might expect the release later in the year - perhaps for Harry's birthday on 31 July?

Steeped in more than 1,100 years of history, The Royal Mint supplies all of the United Kingdom's coinage as well as currency for nations around the world. Renown for craftsmanship and thoughtful design, The Royal Mint also produces commemorative coins, favoured by investors and collectors.
A Millennia of Minting
Founded in the reign of Alfred the Great, around the year 886, The Royal Mint was originally one of several mints which were centralised to London in 1279. For more than 800 years the Mint was based at the Tower of London before moving to Royal Mint Court where it remained until the 1960s.
The Royal Mint has always been on the forefront of economic, technical and artistic innovation. Its skilled craftsmen minted coins that would reach the far corners of the British Empire, establishing the image and reputation of Britain for all whose pockets they ended up in.
In 2010 The Royal Mint became a limited company owned by Her Majesty’s Treasury. In recent years the Mint has struck medals for the 2012 London Olympic Games and opened a visitor centre, The Royal Mint Experience, in Llantrisant, Wales: the current home of The Royal Mint.
Collecting and Investing
The Royal Mint's commemorative and bullion coins – often minted to mark important national events and anniversaries – are not intended for circulation. They might look like ordinary coins but they are generally worth much more, thanks to their scarcity, finish and composition.
Most commemorative coins produced by The Royal Mint are available in a range of striking standards including Gold Proof, Silver Proof, Brilliant Uncirculated and Bullion. Some are also available in collectors sets. Gold and Silver Proof coins are minted in small numbers, making them rare and desirable.
The Royal Mint's commemorative coins are both VAT-free and Capital Gains Tax (CGT) exempt, making them an attractive and valuable investment. Whether you are diversifying your investments or simply appreciate world-class design, commemorative coins from The Royal Mint are a great buy.

We're based in Royal Wootton Bassett, a historic market town in beautiful Wiltshire. If the name rings a bell it's probably because you remember how the community honoured those soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. The 'Royal' in the name was granted in 2011 to recognise this.
Our new showroom – opened in 2020 – is located in the heart of Royal Wootton Bassett in a grand, old bank building. Inside you can view our stock, as well as jewellery and collectibles from several local antique dealers. Look out for the Old Bank Antiques sign and come on in.
