Buy a 1902 Matt Proof Double Sovereign

Struck to mark the Coronation of King Edward VII, the 1902 proof Double Sovereign is a key issue for any collection of British gold coins. Displaying an unusual matt finish, distinct to this issue, these 22-carat gold coins feature the instantly recognisable image of Saint George and the dragon on the obverse, designed in the early 19th century by Benedetto Pistrucci. This is paired with George William de Saulle's classic coinage head of King Edward VII, uncrowned and facing left. These matt proof 1902 gold Two Pound coins, along with the currency strike version, are the only Double Sovereigns issued during Edward VII's reign. With a low mintage of just 8,066, these proof coins are highly collectable, and we never keep an example in stock for long.

Portrait Of King Edward VII

The obverse of this 1902 coin features George William de Saulles' stately uncrowned bust of King Edward VII, facing right and surrounded by a Latin legend that reads 'EDWARDVS VII DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FID: DEF: IND: IMP:'.

Benedetto Pistrucci's Saint George

On the reverse, Benedetto Pistrucci's legendary image of Saint George slaying the dragon is shown with the date 1902 below the ground line. The muted, non-reflective finish enhances Pistrucci's classic design.
