Proof Double Sovereign featuring the special 2012 reverse. This year marked Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The nation celebrated a sixty years on the throne with a whole suite of commemorative events including an extended Bank Holiday weekend, a flotilla on the river Thames and street parties across the country. A range of Diamond Jubilee souvenirs were sold but coins in The Royal Mint’s 2012 Sovereign range are no doubt the most prestigious mementoes of the occasion. These gold proof coins, including the 2012 Double Sovereign, feature a unique reverse, only used in the jubilee year. It’s a reinterpretation of the classic St George and the dragon motif that has been used on these coins since they were first struck in 1817. That historic engraving is the work of Benedetto Pistrucci but the 2012 design was created by British sculptor Paul Day. Day’s design fills the reverse of these coins, the dragon’s body mirroring the Saint’s horse in a dynamic evocation of the well known legend. The date - 2012 - is tucked under the beasts belly to the left of the engraving. Day’s reverse is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, as used on British coinage from 1998 to 2015. This gold Double Sovereign is composed of 15.98 grams of 22 carat (916.7) gold and has a diameter of 28.40 millimetres. It would have originally been offered in a Sovereign set and has been graded PF 70 Ultra Cameo by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, indicating a flawless coins with great contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices. The coin comes sealed in its NGC holder.
