Buy a 1902 Double Sovereign

1902 gold currency strike Double Sovereign, issued in the year of King Edward VII's Coronation. Edward succeeded his mother, Queen Victoria, following her passing in January 1901. The new King's illness delayed the Coronation ceremony until August 1902. This gold Two Pound is from a limited mintage of 46,000 and is struck in solid 22-carat gold to a specification established in the early 19th century. The 1920 Double Sovereign is the only gold £2 issued in Edward VII's reign. Its obverse features an uncrowned portrait of the King by George William de Saulles, paired with Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Saint George and the dragon design on the reverse. This is a key addition to any Double Sovereign collection.

Portrait Of King Edward VII

The obverse of this 1902 gold coin features George William de Saulles' newly introduced uncrowned, right-facing effigy of King Edward VII, together with a long inscription which reads 'EDWARDVS VII DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FID: DEF: IND: IMP:'.

Classic Saint George Design

Benedetto Pistrucci designed the instantly recognisable image of Saint George on a rearing horse, pointing his sword at a prone dragon, which is shown on the reverse of this coin. The date (1902) is displayed below the motif.

Double Sovereign Specification

British Double Sovereigns are traditionally struck in twice the weight of 22-carat gold as a standard 'full' Sovereign. These currency-strike coins measure 28.4 millimetres in diameter and feature a finely milled edge.

1902 Gold Two Pound Mintage

Records indicate that 46,000 of these circulation issue gold £2 coins were issued, alongside a smaller mintage of matt proof Double Sovereigns, both produced by the Royal Mint, which was then located opposite the Tower of London.

Buying Historic British Coins

These historic British gold coins are referred to as 'currency strike' pieces to differentiate them from their proof counterparts, but the truth is they saw little circulation and, as such, can be found in a range of high grades, with wear commensurate with handling and age.
