Gold Two Pounds or Double Sovereign of Queen Victoria, dated 1887. The obverse features the crowned and veiled bust of the queen, known as the Jubilee Head as it was introduced to celebrate her Golden Jubilee. In it she wears pearl earrings, necklaces and a two orders. The initials ‘J.E.B.’ appear at her shoulder, identifying the artist as Joseph Edgar Boehm. This new portrait had been years in the making but proved unpopular and was regarded as undignified. As such it did not remain in use for long. The reverse shows the instantly recognisable image of a sword-wielding Saint George in the act of slaying a dragon which is trampled beneath his horses’ hooves. The initials ‘B.P.’ for Benedetto Pistrucci appear below the ground, to the right. The edge is miiled. Unlike ‘full’ Sovereigns, Double Sovereigns were not minted consistently through the nineteenth century. This Golden Jubilee issue was the first of Queen Victoria’s reign making examples much sought after. Spink 3865.
