Graded by PCGS, this 1902 Double Sovereign, also known as a gold Two Pound coin, was issued to mark the Coronation year of King Edward VII. Edward came to the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Victoria, in early 1901, though his Coronation was delayed until August 1902 due to illness. These handsome gold coins were struck in 22-carat gold. They display George William de Saulles' royal portrait on the obverse, paired with the classic Saint George design on the reverse. With a modest mintage of 46,000, this 1902 issue is the only currency-strike gold £2 of Edward VII's reign. This PCGS-certified example is a key piece for any Sovereign or pre-war gold collection.

Edward VII Obverse Portrait

The obverse bears George William de Saulles' dignified, runcrowned portrait bust of King Edward VII, facing right and surrounded by the Latin inscription 'EDWARDVS VII DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FID: DEF: IND: IMP:'.

Saint George And The Dragon

The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci's timeless depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon: a motif that has adorned British gold coins since 1817. The date (1902) is displayed beneath the scene.

£2 Coin Struck In 22-Carat Gold

Each Edward VII Double Sovereign was struck to the long-established specification in solid 22-carat gold. These coins measure 28.4 millimetres in diameter, measured from milled edge to milled edge.

1902 Gold £2 Mintage Figures

The Royal Mint, then located opposite the Tower of London, produced just 46,000 currency strike Double Sovereigns in 1902, alongside a small mintage of matt proof coins. High-grade examples remain highly collectable.
