200th Anniversary gold Five Sovereign from the UK's national mint. The Royal Mint authorised 1,000 of these large, 39.94 gram, 22-carat (916.7) gold coins to be issued in 2017 but figures suggest that in fact 992 were issued. This example comes in its original presentation packaging, completer with a maroon card outer box with gold lettering, a black card inner box and a glossy wooden display case, engraved with The Royal Mint's logo. The coin itself is enclosed within a screw-top capsule allowing you to enjoy the design without direct handling. Proof Sovereigns issued in 2017 are sought-after because they feature the original design, created in 1817 for the first of these milled gold coins. The work of Benedetto Pistrucci, this features the classic St George and the dragon motif with a few minor differences, including the fact that England's patron saint is holding a broken lance, not a sword, as well as the addition of a stylised garter around the edge, bearing the motto of the Order of the Garter. It's a fun throwback that looks stunning on the 36.02 millimetre surface of this piece. The finish here is brilliant uncirculated, typical of individually presented modern Quintuple Sovereigns. The obverse shows Jody Clark's fifth and final portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Pre-owned. VAT and Capital Gains Tax free. A stand-out, premium Royal Mint collectable.
