The first new Sovereign denomination since the time of King George III! In 2009 The Royal Mint introduced the first Quarter Sovereign, offering exactly 25% of the gold content of a 'full' Sovereign. Quarter Sovereigns weigh in at 1.99 grams and are composed of the same 22-carat (91.67% fine) gold as their larger counterparts. These tiny, pre-owned investment pieces measure just 13.50 millimetres. Designs vary, but this 2009 edition features the classic Saint George and the dragon motif on the reverse, accompanied by a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley on the obverse, both scaled to fit the small surface area. Like all coins in The Royal Mint's Sovereign range, 2009 Quarter Sovereigns are Capital Gains Tax-exempt and VAT-free as an investment in gold.

The First Gold 1/4 Sovereign

While pattern Quarter Sovereigns were struck in 1853, it took until 2009 for The Royal Mint to issue these fractional gold coins for collectors and investors as part of their flagship Sovereign range with a nominal face value of 25p.

Saint George And The Dragon

This new denomination features a much older reverse design, created in the early 19th century by Benedetto Pistrucci. His Saint George and the dragon motif was first used on Sovereigns in 1817. The date (2009) is below.

Portrait Of Queen Elizabeth II

The obverse of this gold coin displays Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth definitive coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The inscription reads 'ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA REGINA · FID · DEF'.

22-Carat Gold Bullion Coin

Quarter Sovereigns are a quarter of the weight of a 'full' Sovereign, being struck in 1.99 grams of solid 22-carat gold and offering 0.0588 troy ounces of pure precious metal. These tiny bullion coins measure just 13.50 millimetres.

2009 Quarter Sovereign Mintage

Reportedly, The Royal Mint authorised the release of some 50,000 gold bullion Quarter Sovereigns in 2009, but experience suggests that the number actually issued may have been lower since pre-owned examples are not particularly common.
