Three piece proof Sovereign set, issued with a special reverse design to celebrate 200 years of these remarkable British gold coins. The image of Saint George and the dragon is instantly recognisable to collectors and investors. It's closely associated with the history of the Sovereign and dates back to the reign of George III when the first of these coins were issued. However, the design that was used in 1817 was a little different to that utilised on modern Sovereigns. Benedetto Pistrucci's original design, enclosed England's patron saint, his horse and the cowering dragon within a stylised garter, bearing the 'HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE' motto of the Order of the Garter: the most senior order of knighthood in the British honours system. This original Sovereign design is replicated on coins from the 2017 Sovereign family, including the 'full' Sovereign, Half Sovereign and Quarter Sovereign included in this set. The obverses all show Jody Clark's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. The date is included in the obverse legend, rather than on the reverse as is standard. Just 1,000 of these proof sets were issued by The Royal Mint in 2017 with the anniversary design making them particularly sought after. These 22 carat (916.7) gold coins are struck to standard specifications and come in their original presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed. The total weight of these pieces is 13.97 grams, equating to an actual gold weight of 12.80 grams. The gold content means that this 2017 set is VAT free and the legal status tender of these coins offers a Capital Gains Tax exemption.

200th Anniversary 2017 Gold Sovereigns

Proof Sovereigns struck in 2017 feature a historic reverse to celebrate the two hundredth anniversary of the modern Sovereign. These gold coins were introduced in 1817 after a major overhaul of British coinage.

The reverse used for 2017 proof Sovereigns recreates the original variant of Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic Saint George motif, as used on the 1817 coin. While most modern Sovereigns feature only the mounted patron saint, dragon and date to the reverse, the earliest Sovereigns enclosed this design within a stylised garter which reads: 'HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE ·' ('shame on he who thinks evil of it').

This is paired with Jody Clark's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen: the fifth such official effigy used on her coinage. Unlike most Sovereigns, the date appears on the obverse, not the reverse. The obverse legend reads: 'ELIZABETH II · DEI · REG · FID · DEF · 2017 ·'.

How To Buy A 2017 Sovereign Set

Sovereigns with alternate reverses always prove popular with collectors. In most years, The Royal Mint utilises the classic St George and the dragon design so any deviation from this attracts great interest.

Just 1,000 fractional three-Sovereign 200th anniversary proof sets were issued in 2017.

This example comes in its original presentation packing from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Each of the coins in this set is struck with a fine proof finish in 22-carat (916.7) gold. Their precious metal content means that we can offer this Sovereign set without VAT. The legal tender status of Sovereigns means that they are Capital Gains Tax exempt for UK buyers, making these coins a sensible investment
