Gold proof 1984 Five Pound coin, graded PF 70 Ultra Cameo by NGC. The Royal Mint started issuing proof Five Sovereign coins annually in 1980. There are earlier examples of this denomination to be found but they were generally only issued in coronation proof sets. The obverse of this early Elizabeth II example features one of the last appearances of Raphael Maklouf’s third definitive effigy of Her Majesty the Queen. This was used on British coinage minted between 1968 and 1984 and can be appreciated in large scale on this weighty gold coin. The reverse features an instantly recognisable image of Saint George in the act of slaying a dragon, crushed beneath his horses hooves. Created by Benedetto Pistrucci for the first modern Sovereigns, this design has become closely associated with these gold coins. The date - 1984 - appears below. This gold coin weighs 39.94 grams and has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres. Like all Sovereigns its composed of 22 carat (916.7) carat gold. It comes from a limited edition of 905 issued individually though a few more were offered in sets. This example has been graded PF 70 Ultra Cameo by the Numismatic Guaranty Company and comes sealed in its holder.
