LEP of just 600! New King Charles III quarter ounce 24-carat gold King Arthur coin: a new entry to the Myths and Legends series from the UK’s national mint. This series explores the world of British folklore and the stories passed down from generation to generation. Earlier releases featuring characters from the tales of Robin Hood were only available with a bullion finish but this new King Arthur miniseries features limited edition proof coins for the first time including this 7.80 gram piece, minted in 999.9 gold. Proof coins are struck multiple times for a high-definition finish with mirrored surfaces and frosted devices. It’s the best way to appreciate David Lawrence’s depiction of the legendary British king. Lawrence’s Arthur wears a crown and a swirling cloak, holding his sword, Excalibur, aloft. In the distance, the turrets of Camelot castle - the home of the Knights of the Round Table - is visible. Lawrence’s design is paired with Martin Jennings’ new portrait of King Charles III. This obverse design differs from that used on the bullion King Arthur coins issued earlier by The Royal Mint which use Jody Clark’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This 2023-dated Myths and Legends UK coin comes in its original capsule and presentation case with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.

Myths And Legends Royal Mint Coins

The Myths and Legends collection is a new range from the UK's national mint. This series is inspired by British folklore and the legendary characters whose names we've passed down the generations in stories, songs and plays. Mythical designs are combined with modern minting technology to create highly collectable coins, intended as investments and collector's pieces.

The first group of coins in this series celebrated Robin Hood and his merry men. The legendary outlaw featured on the first release in the series, issued in 2021, followed by his Sherwood Forest companions - Little John and Maid Marian - in 2022. This trio of Royal Mint coins were struck in one ounce 24-carat and 999 silver editions with designs by British coin artist Jody Clark, better known for his portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II and his contribution to the Queen's Beasts series.

2023 UK King Arthur Coin Range

The latest release in the Myths and Legends collection features King Arthur, the legendary king of Britain. Arthur is supposed to have lived during the Dark Ages with early references to the mythical warrior found in early Welsh literature. Centuries later, medieval authors embellished these old tales, introducing the character of the magician Merlin, his sword, Excalibur, and a quest for the Holy Grail to the mythos of Arthur. His legend continues to be reinterpreted in books, artwork, films, television and now on official UK coinage.

King Arthur is shown on this new 2023 coin wearing a crown and wielding his sword, Excalibur. Camelot, home to the Knights of the Round Table, can be seen in the background. The design is the work of renowned illustrator and sculptor David Lawrence, know for his work on the Tudor Beasts series. Lawrence has created a recognisable image of this storybook figure.

Further coins in this mini-series will feature Merlin and Morgan le Fay.

King Arthur Royal Mint Proof Coins

Earlier coins in the Myths and Legends collection have only been available with a bullion finish.

One-ounce 999 silver and 999.9 gold King Arthur coins have been struck featuring micro-dot textured backgrounds as a security feature. These investment pieces show Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, making them some of the only 2023 coins to feature Her Majesty.

By contrast, proof-finish King Arthur coins feature the new coin portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings. The new effigy was personally approved by His Majesty and shows him facing the opposite direction to his mother.

These 2023 Charles III King Arthur coins are available in a range of sizes and finishes, including:

Are King Arthur Coins A Good Investment?

Proof coins are struck to a higher standard than their bullion and circulating counterparts. You can expect a flawless appearance with mirrored surfaces and frosted devices, plus fine detail you won't see on standard coinage. Since the process of making proof coins is so time-consuming, they are generally issued in limited numbers; intended for serious collectors.

As UK legal tender the coins in this range are Capital Gains Tax exempt: a tax benefit that does not apply to other bullion products like bars. 2023 King Arthur gold proof coins are also VAT free as investment grade Au.

These coins have an intrinsic value and a numismatic appeal as some of the first to be struck in the UK with a portrait of Charles III. Collectors will want to secure a King Arthur coin, especially if they intend to acquire other pieces from the Myths & Legends series.
