Brilliant uncirculated 2022 Five Sovereign coin from a very limited edition of just 750 pieces.
What Are Gold Quintuple Sovereigns?
Quintuple Sovereigns - also known as Five Sovereigns or gold Five Pounds - are a rare denomination with a long history. The first Five Sovereign pieces were struck as patterns in the 1820s, not long after the modern Sovereign was introduced. Another rare gold Five Pound coin was issued in 1839, bearing William Wyon's Una and the Lion design on its reverse. The first Five Sovereign to circulate was issued in 1887: Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee year.
Some of those 1887 Quintuple Sovereigns were offered in official Royal Mint proof sets and, in the dozen decades since, this has been the most common format in which these coins have been issued. Today they are usually only seen in large, five-coin Sovereign sets which are only available in limited numbers. These 22 carat gold coins measure 36.02 millimetres in diameter and weight 39.94 grams (actual gold weight: 36.61 grams).
Gold £5 Crowns are more commonly offered individually. While such pieces may have a similar specification to a Quintuple Sovereign, the latter will not announce its denomination on its face: a hallmark of the Sovereign family.

2022 Platinum Jubilee Sovereign Family
Most Quintuple Sovereigns feature an instantly-recognisable reverse image of Saint George, slaying a dragon. This 2022 Sovereign collection marks one of the rare departures from this tradition, instead featuring a design inspired by Elizabeth II's royal arms. Crafted by heraldic artist Timothy Noad and the subject of much speculation ahead of its unveiling, the reverse is reminiscent of that which appeared on One Pound coins designed by Eric Sewell.
Noad was also responsible for the reverse of the 2002 Sovereign, struck for the Queen's Golden Jubilee so it's fitting that he should be called upon again for this milestone issue. Speaking of the commission he said:
'It was thrilling to be asked to submit designs for The Sovereign once again. The Sovereign is the most special coin in the UK; it represents the pinnacle of minting and has a strong association with the monarch, even in its name.'
His reinterpretation of the royal coat of arms is paired with Jody Clark's fifth official effigy of Elizabeth II on this Five Sovereign piece which appears alongside a legend that reads: 'ELIZABETH II · DEI · GRA · REGINA · FID · DEF'.
Buy A 2022 Five Sovereign Coin
Five Sovereigns are a scarce denomination and most issues are uncommon, usually only found in five-coin proof Sovereign sets. This 2022 release is doubly unusual in that it is being offered in an individual presentation has been minted with a brilliant uncirculated (BU) finish, struck with hand-prepared dies. These features and the limited nature of the issue are designed to ensure that this coin catches the eye of modern Sovereign collectors.
Just 750 of these BU 2022 Quintuple Sovereigns have been issued by The Royal Mint.
Like all coins in the gold Sovereign family, the 22 carat gold composition of the 2022 Five Sovereign lends the coin an important VAT exemption. As UK legal tender with a face value of £5 / Five Pounds, the coin is also free from Capital Gains Tax.

Steeped in more than 1,100 years of history, The Royal Mint supplies all of the United Kingdom's coinage as well as currency for nations around the world. Renown for craftsmanship and thoughtful design, The Royal Mint also produces commemorative coins, favoured by investors and collectors.
A Millennia of Minting
Founded in the reign of Alfred the Great, around the year 886, The Royal Mint was originally one of several mints which were centralised to London in 1279. For more than 800 years the Mint was based at the Tower of London before moving to Royal Mint Court where it remained until the 1960s.
The Royal Mint has always been on the forefront of economic, technical and artistic innovation. Its skilled craftsmen minted coins that would reach the far corners of the British Empire, establishing the image and reputation of Britain for all whose pockets they ended up in.
In 2010 The Royal Mint became a limited company owned by Her Majesty’s Treasury. In recent years the Mint has struck medals for the 2012 London Olympic Games and opened a visitor centre, The Royal Mint Experience, in Llantrisant, Wales: the current home of The Royal Mint.
Collecting and Investing
The Royal Mint's commemorative and bullion coins – often minted to mark important national events and anniversaries – are not intended for circulation. They might look like ordinary coins but they are generally worth much more, thanks to their scarcity, finish and composition.
Most commemorative coins produced by The Royal Mint are available in a range of striking standards including Gold Proof, Silver Proof, Brilliant Uncirculated and Bullion. Some are also available in collectors sets. Gold and Silver Proof coins are minted in small numbers, making them rare and desirable.
The Royal Mint's commemorative coins are both VAT-free and Capital Gains Tax (CGT) exempt, making them an attractive and valuable investment. Whether you are diversifying your investments or simply appreciate world-class design, commemorative coins from The Royal Mint are a great buy.
