22 carat gold uncirculated UK Half Sovereign from 2021. These Royal Mint coins have a history that stretches back more than 200 years to the reign of King George III. It was after British victory in the Napoleonic Wars and a wholesale overhaul of UK currency that the first modern Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns were introduced. The Half Sovereigns issued in 1817 established the specifications still followed today: each measures 19.30 millimetres in diameter and is composed of 3.99 grams of 22 carat gold, i.e. 3.66 grams or .1177 troy ounces of pure precious metal. Their gold content, together with their status as UK legal tender makes Half Sovereigns, including the 2021 edition, VAT and Capital Gains Tax exempt. You’ll find Jody Clark’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen on the obverse of this coin. The reverse features the instantly recognisable image of Saint George in the act of slaying a prone dragon from his position on horseback. It’s been seen on many Half Sovereigns down the centuries and has a close association with the gold coins in the minds of investors and collectors. Our 2021 uncirculated bullion Half Sovereigns are offered about Extremely Fine (aEF) or better condition. The finish is protected by a plastic slip or capsule. The History Of Gold Half Sovereigns

The first Half Sovereigns bore the name of Tudor king, Henry VIII. The legacy of these English gold coins lives on in the British Half Sovereign, introduced in 1817, late in the reign of George III. These Georgian Half Sovereigns established specifications for the Half Sovereign that are still followed today.

Each of these coins are composed of 3.99 grams of 22 carat gold. That equates to .1176 troy ounces - exactly half the fine gold weight of a 'full' Sovereign. They have a diameter of 19.30 millimetres and a face value - technically - of 50p though they do not show their value on their face and their worth is much higher thanks to their gold content.

Half Sovereigns once circulated across the globe, a symbol of the British Empire, trusted to contain a known quantity of gold. Regular production ended in 1926 with only special coronation issues struck until The Royal Mint began offering a limited number of Half Sovereigns again in 1980.

What Do 2021 Half Sovereign Look Like?

2021 Half Sovereigns feature a reverse design that is closely tied to the story of these historic gold coins.

Crafted by Italian artist, Benedetto Pistrucci, for the first modern Sovereigns, the image of Saint George on horseback, finishing off a cowed dragon, has been a perennial presence on British coinage ever since. Proof 2021 Half Sovereigns and other proof coins in the 2021 Sovereign family do feature a special '95' crown privy mark but this is not used on the bullion coins.

Pistrucci's design is paired with Jody Clark's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. This is the fifth official effigy used on her coinage since her first issue in 1953. Clark's portrait shows the Queen wearing the Diamond Diadem and earrings. The legend reads: 'ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA REGINA · FID · DEF'.

Frequently Asked Questions

2021 bullion Half Sovereigns are composed of 3.99 grams of 22 carat gold. The 3.66 grams (0.1177 troy ounces) of pure gold that they contain gives them a value that is dependent on the spot price. Visit our Sell Your Coins page for an up to date valuation.

We don't currently have mintage figures for the number of uncirculated Half Sovereigns issued in 2021 by The Royal Mint. Just 1,500 proof Half Sovereigns were offered in this year (not including those in sets) so perhaps the number of bullion coins issued in this year is similarly low.
