Graded PF 69 Ultra Cameo by the Numismatic Guaranty Company, this proof Quintuple Sovereign is a stunning piece. Benedetto Pistrucci's classic St George and the dragon design shines on the 36.02 millimetre surface of this large gold coin. Created for the first modern Sovereigns, issued during the reign of King George III, this motif has endured on these sought-after Royal Mint coins for more than 200 years. The artist's initials - 'B. P.' - can be seen just to the right of the date, below the winged dragon, crushed beneath the hooves of a rearing horse. The obverse of this gold Five Pound coin features Arnold Machin's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right and wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This 1981 coin is one of a very limited number of Quintuple Sovereigns issued with the second definitive royal portrait. Regular issues of these 39.94 gram 22-carat gold coins only began in 1980. The following year, some 3,320 were released in an individual presentations with further examples offered in sets. This example has been highly graded by NGC and comes sealed in its clear holder. A very attractive piece.
