Buy a 1902 Matt Proof Five Sovereign

A coveted 1902 matt proof gold Five Sovereign, issued for King Edward VII's coronation year. Edward ascended the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Victoria. Throughout his short reign, British coins were struck with an uncrowned portrait by George William de Saulles, which appears to have an attractive effect on this large 39.9 gram 22-carat gold coin. The same can be said of the instantly recognisable image of Saint George and the dragon, created by Benedetto Pistrucci back in 1817. 1902 proof Quintuple Sovereigns, originally made for inclusion in long proof sets, are unusual for their matt finish, which gives them a distinctive satin-like appearance. High-grade examples remain highly desirable and represent a key acquisition for serious Sovereign collectors.

Saint George Reverse Design

The reverse of this proof issue displays Benedetto Pistrucci's enduring Saint George mounted on horseback, slaying the dragon, with the date (1902) beneath the ground line. This design was first seen on gold Sovereigns in 1817.

Portrait Of King Edward VII

The obverse of this 1902 coin features the refined right-facing portrait of King Edward VII by George William de Saulles. Around the bust runs the Latin inscription: 'EDWARDVS VII DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FID: DEF: IND: IMP:'.

Matt Proof Finish Gold £5

Unlike standard currency issues, this gold proof coin was struck with a distinctive matt finish in solid 22-carat gold. This finish is unique among Coronation proof sets and makes the 1902 Five Sovereign particularly collectable.

1902 Five Sovereign Mintage

These matt proof Five Sovereigns were minted only for inclusion in 1902 'long' proof sets, of which 8,066 were issued by The Royal Mint. Currency issue gold £5 coins were also issued in this year, without the matt finish.
