A collectable King George the Third gold Half Sovereign, dated 1817: the first year in which this coin was minted. The obverse features the laureate head of George III, facing right, with the date below by Benedetto Pistrucci. The reverse shows a crowned quartered shield of arms, representing England, Scotland and Ireland with the arms of the House of Hanover in the middle. This design is by William Wyon. The legend around translates to ‘King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith’. This coin was introduced as part of the recoinage programme that followed the end of the Napoleonic Wars and was issued in the same year as the more famous first full sovereigns. A great piece of history to add to your collection.
