Gold proof Sovereign set from 2005 featuring three coins with a one-year-only reverse design. Most Sovereigns minted in the last century have featured an instantly recognisable image of Saint George to the reverse. This historic design by Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci was created for the first modern Sovereigns, issued in 1817. Pistrucci’s depiction of England’s patron saint shows classical influences, catching George in the act of slaying a dragon that is crushed by his horses hooves. For 2005 Sovereigns, this famous coinage design was reinterpreted by heraldic artist Timothy Noad. Noad’s reverse, used only in this year features an stylised St George, about to swing his sword at a dragon whose wings hi-light the date. This is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen to the obverse. Noad’s design appears across the Double Sovereign, ‘full’ Sovereign and Half Sovereign in this highly collectible proof set. Together, the coins comprise 27.94 grams of 22 carat gold (25.59 grams of pure gold). They come enclosed in their original presentation case from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity inside. This confirms that just 2,500 of these sets were authorised worldwide. Gold proof Double Sovereign, 'full' Sovereign and Half Sovereign with Timothy Noad's 2005 St George reverse.

Three Gold Sovereigns

Gold proof Sovereign sets are sought after by collectors. They're among The Royal Mint's most prestigious annual releases and are only available in limited numbers.

This 2005 proof Sovereign set is no exception and includes three gold coins:

  • 2005 Half Sovereign composed of 3.99 grams of 22 carat gold with a 19.30 millimetre diameter
  • 2005 'full' Sovereign: 7.98 grams, 22.05 millimetres
  • 2005 Double Sovereign or Two Sovereign piece: 14.96 grams, 28.40 millimetres

All the coins in this set are struck to proof standard. Intended for collectors, proof coins are struck multiple times with hand prepared dies for a superior finish.

Noad's Saint George

2005 marks one of the rare years that Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Saint George and the dragon reverse is replaced with an alternate design.

For 2005 Sovereigns, this historic motif was replaced with a very different Saint George, crafted by heraldic artist Timothy Noad. His reverse centres on a crusader shield with Saint George's Cross, which protects a sword-wielding Saint, about to strike a winged dragon. It's a modern, action-packed and dynamic design.

Noad's reverse is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley's depiction of Her Majesty the Queen. In use between 1998 and 2015, this fourth official effigy shows a greater degree or realism than its idealised predecessors. Broadley's initials - IRB - appear below Elizabeth II’s portrait on each of the Sovereigns in this set.

Collectible Proof Set

Just 2,500 of these three-coin proof sets were issued by The Royal Mint in 2005.

Together, the coins in this set are composed of 27.94 grams of 22 carat gold. That's 25.59 grams of pure gold between the three coins. Like all gold Sovereigns, these are exempt from Capital Gains Tax as UK legal tender and VAT free as investment grade gold.

The coins are offered in their original packaging from The Royal Mint which is composed of individual capsules inside a velvet-lined leather box. A numbered certificate of authenticity is enclosed.
