These 1998 coins were some of the first to feature Ian Rank-Broadley's newly introduced fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which replaced Raphael Maklouf's effigy. This is surrounded by an inscription that reads 'ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA REGINA · FID · DEF ·'
Benedetto Pistrucci's classic engraving of Saint George and the dragon appears on the reverse of the four Sovereigns in this 1998 set. Created in the early 19th century, this design has become a hallmark of the British Sovereign series.
All four Sovereigns in this set are struck with a premium proof finish in solid 22-carat gold. Together, these coins weigh 67.89 grams, equating to an actual gold weight of just over two troy ounces (62.23 grams).
The Royal Mint authorised a release of up to 1,000 of these four-coin proof Sovereign sets, but it appears that just 789 were actually issued, making this a low-mintage set. Three-coin Sovereign sets were also issued in 1998.
Originally, these sets were issued in a red leather box, lined with black velvet and fitted for capsuled coins. This pre-owned example comes with all the packaging and the individually numbered certificate of authenticity.
