Premium three-coin gold proof Sovereign set, issued by The Royal Mint in 1987. Included are a 1987 proof-finish Double Sovereign, a 'full' Sovereign and a Half Sovereign, all struck in the UK in 22-carat 916.7) gold. These coins all feature the instantly-recognisable image of England's patron saint, St George, shown in the act of slaying a fearsome dragon from his position on a rearing horse. This engraving was created by Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci in the early nineteenth century to grace the first milled Sovereigns, issued in 1817. This historic design is paired with the third definitive coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf, used on UK currency between 1985 and 1997. Pistrucci and Maklouf's designs are shown to great advantage by the fine proof finish used for the coins in this set. This production technique produces coins with mirrored surfaces and highly-detailed frosted devices. Aimed at collectors, proof coins are only offered in limited numbers. 12,500 of these 3-coin sets were authorised by The Royal Mint in 1987 as the only Sovereign set available that year. Decades later, finding one in pristine condition can be a challenge. This example features the three coins in their original capsules, inside the velvet-line, red leather box of issue. The official numbered certificate of authenticity is enclosed.
