22-carat gold proof 1987 Half Sovereign from The Royal Mint. These highly collectable UK coins were first issued at the same time as the first modern 'full' Sovereigns. Half Sovereigns contain exactly half the amount of gold as their larger counterparts but often feature the same designs. This 1987 edition features Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Her Majesty The Queen. Introduced in 1985, Maklouf's effigy shows Elizabeth II wearing the George IV State Diadem. The reverse shows the instantly-recognisable image of England's patron saint, St George, depicted in the act of slaying a fearsome dragon from his position on a rearing horse. It's a classic coinage motif, used perennially on Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns since 1817. In 1987 the UK's national mint struck just 8,187 proof Half Sovereigns for distribution worldwide. Our pre-owned 1987 Half Sovereigns come in their original box of issue with the 3.99 gram crown gold coin encased in a screw-top capsule which protects the fine proof finish. Proof coins are intended for collectors and feature a high-contrast appearance with mirrored surfaces and frosted devices. A key addition to any Half Sovereign collection.
