The turn of the first millennium was marked, for Britain, by the presence of the Romans, and all the modernising technologies they brought. The second millennium saw unprecedented change. The beginning and end (1001 and 2000 CE) were almost unrecognisable, with significant advances happening in industry, culture, and society. To celebrate the landmark of entering the new millennium, and all the hopes for a prosperous third millennia, The Royal Mint offered a range of commemorative Crowns. It features a reverse designed by Jeffrey Matthews - better known for his stamps. His engraving shows a pair of clock hands, set to twelve o’clock, superimposed over a map of the British Isles. The dial sits on the approximate location of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. This clever design represents the moment 1999 ended and the year 2000 began. The obverse shows Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, the fourth official effigy. The edge bears the words ‘WHAT’S PAST IS PROLOGUE,’ a quote from Shakespeare’s The Tempest and a positive vision for the future. Presented in its original commemorative folder, this Brilliant Uncirculated coin comes with additional information about the significance of Greenwich, and stylishly displays the crown. This BU Five Pound is made of the same cupro-nickel alloy as the coins in circulation, but struck to a higher standard to give an attractive finish and allow the design details to be appreciated. It weighs the traditional 28.28 grams and has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres.
