Limited edition BUnc Football 2 Pound coin from The Royal Mint. In 1996, England hosted the tenth UEFA European Football Championship. A record of 48 nations competed in eight stadiums around the UK, from Wembley in London to St James' Park in Newcastle. To celebrate, The Royal Mint released this brilliant uncirculated Two Pound coin with a reverse crafted by sculptor John Wills. In a simple but instantly recognisable design, the coin gives the impression of a football – the unusual dished effect adding to the image. The date '1996' sits in the centre of the ball, and is surrounded by sixteen small rings symbolising each team that would participate in the finals. The edge inscription reads 'THE TENTH EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP'. The obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II in her third definitive portrait by Raphael Maklouf. In a nickel-brass alloy, this old-style £2 is finished to a much higher standard to give a beautiful finish with every detail evident. Weighing 15.98 grams with a diameter of 28.40 millimetres, your BU coin comes in its original Royal Mint presentation wallet which features lots of extra information about the iconic tournament and the history of football. A great gift.
