Buy a 2020 Queen's Beasts White Lion Of Mortimer Two Ounce Silver Bullion Coin

Two ounce 99.9% silver bullion coin featuring the White Lion of Mortimer from The Royal Mint’s Queen’s Beasts series. This was the eighth bullion release in the ten part series, not including the completer coin that capped off the blockbuster Queen’s Beasts series. Based on a menagerie of heraldic statues that guarded the Westminster Abbey for Elizabeth II’s coronation, this Royal Mint collection, been in 2016, celebrates the Queen’s royal and noble lineage. The White Lion is a heraldic beast associated with the family of Anne de Mortimer, through whom Henry VII, the first Tudor king, claimed royal descent. Her white lion is seen in profile on this coin, one paw resting on the shield which shows a white rose, encircled by a golden sun: a symbol linked to the House of York. Unlike the Lion of England, this Queen's Beast is uncrowned. This design, shown on this bullion coin with a chainmail backdrop, is the work of Jody Clark who is also the artist behind the portrait of Her Majesty the Queen shown on the obverse of this coin. From an unlimited mintage, this Five Pound piece is composed of 62.42 grams of .999 fine silver. It has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres, similar to the 1oz edition but boasting a double thickness which lends a satisfying weight. This coin ships free today to UK addresses from our shop in Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire.

Lions have been used in heraldry for centuries, representing strength and courage. As the 'King of the Beasts' the lion is often associated with royalty, shown crowned on coats of arms of many European monarchs and nobles.

The White Lion of Mortimer is shown uncrowned in this design by Jody Clark, its tail tucked behind its body to suggest dignified loyalty. This lion - presented quite differently to the Lion of England - is a symbol associated with Anne de Mortimer, grandmother of Yorkist King Edward IV. Later, King Henry VII, the first of the Tudors, used the White Lion to show his links with the House of York. Modern British monarchs, including King Charles III are distantly related to their medieval predecessors.

The shield that the White Lion of Mortimer grasps with its clawed paw is emblazoned with a 'white rose en soliel', another symbol associated with the Yorkists. It combines their traditional white rose (as opposed to the rival House of Lancaster's red rose) with a sun-ray motif. Some believe that the sunburst design was incorporated into the House of York's heraldry after a parhelion or 'sun dog' appeared to the future Edward IV's troops before a major battle during the Wars of the Roses, interpreted as a sign from God.
