The Queen Mother On UK Coins

Born in 1900, Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon came to prominence when she married the future King George VI in 1923. Following the abdication of Edward VIII, she acted as Queen Consort between 1936 and 1952 until her daughter, Elizabeth II, acceded to the throne. In her widowhood, she was affectionately known as the Queen Mother, and she maintained her lifelong passions for outdoor pursuits, especially fishing and horse racing.

The Queen Mother became the first person other than a reigning monarch to be featured on a UK coin during their lifetime when The Royal Mint issued a 1980 Crown coin to mark her 80th birthday. Designed by Richard Guyatt, these coins are available in silver proof and cupronickel. In 1990 the Mint marked her 90th with another Crown with a reverse design by Leslie Durbin, this time denominated at Five Pounds (available in BUnc, silver proof and gold proof). The Queen Mum reached her 100th birthday in 2000, an occasion celebrated by a further £5, created by Ian Rank-Broadley. Buy this 2000 commemorative coin in BU, silver proof, piedfort silver proof or gold proof). Her passing in 2002 was a great loss to Her Majesty the Queen and the subject of a fourth and final Five Pound Crown, designed by Avril Vaughan (see this in BU, silver proof and gold proof).
