The 1935 Silver Jubilee

King George V's Silver Jubilee in 1935 celebrated 25 years on the throne, and to mark the occasion, the Royal Mint struck a special crown coin: the first Crown-sized piece issued for circulation in Britain since 1902.

Percy Metcalfe's St George

1935 Crown coins are sometimes called 'Rocking Horse' Crowns because of the resemblance of the Saint George design on this coin to a child's rocking horse. This motif was created by English artist Percy Metcalfe.

Portrait Of King George V

The obverse of these coins features a left-facing bare head portrait of King George V by Australian sculptor Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal, the words 'GEORGIVS V. DG. BRITT: OMN: REX. FD. IND: IMP:' around the edge.

Made From 500 Silver

1935 George V Crown coins are made of .500 (50%) silver, typical of coins struck in the UK between 1920 and 1946. These coins have a total weight of 28.28 grams and measure 38.61 millimetres in diameter.

First Commemorative Crown

Records indicate that 714,769 of these 50% silver Rocking Horse Crowns were issued by the Mint in 1935. While struck for circulation, these coins were often saved, so they can generally be found in very good condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

1935 Crown coins, known as 'Rocking Horse' Crowns, are worth nearly £10 for their 50% silver content alone. Collectors can expect to pay somewhat more than this to acquire these collectable British coins in good condition, with rare variants attracting much higher prices.

Records suggest that some 714,769 silver 'Rocking Horse' Crown coins were struck in 1935 by The Royal Mint to celebrate King George V's Silver Jubilee. A further 2,500 were issued with a specimen proof finish and a raised edge inscription for coin collectors.

1935 King George V Crown coins are made from 50% or 500 silver. The rest of the weight of these coins is made up of copper, nickel and zinc. This is typical of UK coins minted between 1920 and 1946. After 1946, the silver content of UK coins was entirely removed.
