Buy a Merlen Shield Gold Set

Premium gold coin set, celebrating Jean Baptiste Merlen's enduring shield reverses. In the early 19th century, the tails side of many UK coins was redesigned as part of a major overhaul of British currency. Among the most celebrated reverses from this period are attributed to Jean Baptiste Merlen (1769-1850), a French-born engraver, recruited to work for the Royal Mint in the aftermath of the Battle of Waterloo. Merlen's work can be seen on the Sovereigns of three British monarchs: George IV, William IV and Victoria and three historic examples of his work are included in this limited edition set. These are accompanied by a modern tribute to the engraver's work: the 2025 William IV Crown, struck in 24-carat gold as part of The Royal Mint's celebrated Great Engravers collection. With just 15 of these sets compiled, this is a truly scarce collector's piece for those who appreciate Jean Baptiste Merlen's oeuvre.

Gold Merlen Shield Coin Set

This premium collectors set from The Royal Mint features four gold coins with iconic shield of arms reverses.

Jean Baptiste Merlen (1769-1850)

Jean Baptiste Merlen was a French-born engraver who worked in Britain as a die engraver and medallist at the Royal Mint during the early nineteenth century, contributing to UK coinage and official medals.

Three Historic Gold Sovereigns

Merlen designed the crowned shield of arms reverse used on King George IV's Sovereigns from 1825 until the end of King William IV's reign. He also engraved the iconic wreath design seen on early Victorian Sovereigns.

The Great Engravers Collection

The fourth coin in this set is a modern celebration of Merlen's craft, inspired by the mantled shield reverse the artist designed for the 1831 Crown. This iconic reverse was remastered in 2026 for The Great Engravers collection.

Limited Edition Of Just 15 Sets

The Royal Mint has compiled just 15 of these gold coin sets, all of which include a 2oz gold proof William IV Crown coin, alongside three historic gold Sovereigns from the reigns of George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria.
