One of just 40 issued and graded PF 70 Ultra Cameo by NGC! This two kilogram 999 silver Una and the Lion coin is among the most exclusive pieces from this supremely popular collection. This coin was part of the first release in The Royal Mint’s Great Engravers range which celebrates the best of British numismatic design with carefully considered reissues of standout historic coins. Regarded as one of the most beautiful coins ever issued, the 1839 ‘Una and the Lion’ gold Five Pound was an obvious choice to launch this premium range. The instantly recognisable design, reproduced in exquisite detail by the team at the UK’s national mint, is the work of William Wyon who served as Great Engraver to the Royal Mint in the early 19th century. It’s inspired by Edmund Spencer’s epic poem ‘The Faerie Queene’ and shows Queen Victoria in the guise of Lady Una, leading a tightly lion, representing England. The allegorical design was groundbreaking when it was first struck on a very limited number of gold Five Sovereign coins and remains beguiling in its modern iteration, particularly on large pieces like this 2kg coin which measures 15 centimetres from edge to edge. The obverse shows Jody Clark’s fifth and final portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, replacing the portrait of her ancestor, Victoria, which graced the 1837 coin. This remarkable piece is offered without its original presentation packaging, sealed in its large Numismatic Guaranty Corporation holder. The brown label displays the issue number (blanked out on the images displayed on this page).
