PF 63 Ultra Cameo graded 22-carat gold proof Quintuple Sovereign struck in the year of King George VI's coronation. This was the only gold Five Pound coin issued in George's time on the throne which encompassed the years of the Second World War. George's father, King George V, passed away in 1936 and was succeeded initially by his eldest son, Edward VIII. Edward abdicated later the same year leaving the throne to his younger brother. This 1937 coin features the definitive left-facing coin portrait of George VI, as used on all UK money issued during his reign. This is the work of Humphrey Paget OBE. The reverse shows the instantly-recognisable image of England's patron saint, St George, caught in the act of slaying a dragon from his position on horseback. The motif with the date below appears to great effect on this large 916.7 gold coin. Some 5,001 of these Quintuple Sovereigns were issued by the UK's Royal Mint in 1937 as part of commemorative proof sets, sold in George VI's coronation year. This example has been graded PF 63 Ultra Cameo by the Numismatic Guaranty Company and comes sealed in its brown label clear holder. An important piece.
