SHIPPING TODAY! New for 2023: King Charles III Coronation gold proof 'full' Sovereign coin from The Royal Mint. These highly-collectible coins from the UK's national mint are from an exclusive range that features Martin Jennings' crowned portrait of His Majesty the King. Charles was crowned on 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey and the limited edition coronation collection is the perfect way to commemorate this historic occasion. While the obverse of this gold Sovereign is a one-off, the reverse features the classic Saint George and the dragon motif by Benedetto Pistrucci, seen on many of these coins over the centuries. Sovereigns have been struck to the same specification since 1817: each piece measures 22.05 millimetres from milled edge to milled edge and is composed of exactly 7.98 grams of 22-carat 'crown' gold. The actual pure gold weight here is 7.31 grams or .2354 troy ounces. This 2023 Sovereign features a fine proof finish, achieved with multiple strikes of hand prepared dies. Our brand new coins come from a strictly limited presentation of 15,000 proof Sovereigns, authorised for distribution worldwide. Order today and get your 2023 proof Sovereign in its original Royal Mint presentation packaging with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.

What Are Gold Proof Sovereigns?

The first Sovereigns were large hammered coins issued by the kings of the Tudor dynasty. The prestigious name was later revived for a new gold coin, issued after a major overhaul of British currency.

The Sovereigns issued in 1817 established a specification still followed today, more than 200 years later.

Each of these gold coins is composed of 7.98 grams of 22 carat (916.7) gold and has a diameter of 22.05 millimetres.

Proof Sovereigns used to be extremely rare but since 1979 The Royal Mint has offered a very limited number annually. Designed for collectors, proof Sovereigns have a high-definition finish allowing you to enjoy classic coinage designs as the artists intended.
