2023 Elizabeth II Gold Proof Sovereign

SV23 2023 Elizabeth II Gold Proof Sovereign Mock Up Reverse
(VAT Exempt)
Coming soon: 2023 proof Sovereigns! Proof Sovereigns are finished to a much higher standard than their circulating counterparts. Intended for collectors they’re struck multiple times with hand-prepared dies for a superior, high-contrast, high-definition appearance. In addition, these coins may display special designs, exclusive to proof editions. We can expect the obverse to feature Jody Clark’s portrait of Elizabeth II. The reverse will most likely feature Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic Saint George design. That said, 2023 will mark 70 years since Her Majesty the Queen’s coronation in 1953. There’s a chance that The Royal Mint might celebrate this royal milestone with a special privy mark or reverse design: we’ll just have to wait and see. These coins will be issued by The Royal Mint in late 2022. Want to be the first to get your hands on one?Click TRACK PRODUCT below and create an account. What Are Gold Proof Sovereigns?

The first Sovereigns were large hammered coins issued by the kings of the Tudor dynasty. The prestigious name was later revived for a new gold coin, issued after a major overhaul of British currency.

The Sovereigns issued in 1817 established a specification still followed today, more than 200 years later. Each of these gold coins is composed of 7.98 grams of 22 carat (916.7) gold and has a diameter of 22.05 millimetres.

Proof Sovereigns used to be extremely rare but since 1979 The Royal Mint has offered a very limited number annually. Designed for collectors, proof Sovereigns have a high definition finish allowing you to enjoy classic coinage designs as the artists intended.

What Will The 2023 Sovereign Look Like?

In recent years, Sovereigns have featured a range of commemorative designs, authorised for royal anniversaries. Coins in the 2022 Sovereign family featured a special royal arms reverse, issued to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

We know that the obverse of 2023 proof Sovereigns will likely feature Jody Clark's portrait of Elizabeth II, in use on British money since 2015. Most gold Sovereigns feature Benedetto Pistrucci's image of St George and the Dragon on their reverse. It's a design crafted in the early nineteenth century for the first modern Sovereigns but will it be used again in 2023?

We're not sure exactly what these coins will look like yet but we'll update you as soon as we have more clues. Keep an eye on our blog and our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages for news and info on mintages (currently unknown).
