Brand new 2023 piedfort Sovereigns from The Royal Mint: from a limited edition presentation of just 950. These double-weight coins are a relatively new addition to the British Sovereign family. Struck in 15.98 grams of 22-carat gold, these coins are twice the weight and twice the thickness of a standard 'full' Sovereign. This unusual denomination is made extra special by the crowned royal portrait of King Charles III seen on the obverse. This is the work of British sculptor Martin Jennings who is the artist behind the official royal coin portrait of His Majesty. The crowned portrait has only been authorised for use on a select range of premium coinage, issued in Charles' coronation year. This one-off design is paired with a classic reverse, instantly recognisable to collectors of British currency. Benedetto Pistrucci's Saint George and the dragon design has been a perennial presence on these gold coins since they were first struck to their current specification in 1817. The artist's initials - 'B.P.' - can be seen to the right of the date, below the winged dragon who cowers beneath the hooves of a rearing horse. Our 2023 King Charles III piedfort proof Sovereigns are offered in their original presentation packaging from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
