From a limited edition presentation of just 750 coins, this matt-finish Sovereign was struck on 15 August 2020 to mark 75 years since VJ Day. Victory over Japan Day is the date in 1945 on which Imperial Japan formally surrendered, effectively bringing World War II to an end. The official UK commemoration is held on 15 August while in the US VJ Day is marked on 2 September when the official surrender document was signed. Japan's surrender followed the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the end of the war in Europe, celebrated as VE Day on 8 May. The obverse of this commemorative coin shows Jody Clark's fifth and final definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right. The reverse shows St George, mounted on a horse, pointing his sword at a winged dragon. A tiny 'VJ75' mintmark appears to the left of the date, below the design. This brilliant uncirculated Sovereign has a plain edge and is struck to standard specifications in 7.98 grams of 22-carat gold. The matt finish is rarely seen on Sovereigns outside of the sporadic 'Struck On The Day' issues and represents an attractive and unusual addition to any collection of British gold coins. This pre-owned coin comes in its original presentation packaging from The Royal Mint which consists of a cream box, a printed sleeve, an information booklet and a numbered and hand signed certificate of authenticity.
