In 2019, The Royal Mint marked 50 years of the 50p coin with the release of a special set of commemorative coins. When it was introduced in 1969, the Fifty Pence piece was the world's first seven-sided coin and caused quite a stir in the UK. The seven rounded sides were chosen as they would be easy to distinguish from other coins - both by sight and feeling - and they would still be able to roll in vending machines. Its release was exciting for some, but others felt so strongly about it that an 'Anti-Heptagonist' society was set up to oppose it. In the subsequent fifty years, this unusual coin became well-loved by the British public, featuring over seventy different designs, from commemorating battles and individuals to celebrating fictional characters and sporting achievements. The first 50p reverse was designed by prolific numismatic artist, Christopher Ironside, and this commemorative edition returns to Ironside's iconic design. It features Britannia sitting with a shield, a lion lies next to her as she holds an olive branch and trident aloft. Around the edge of this special edition, are the letters A to G in recognition of the engineering process involved in minting the coin. On the opposite side of the coin to Britannia is Jody Clark's 2015 portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which is her fifth official effigy on UK coinage. This gold-proof coin is composed of 15.50 grams of 22-carat gold, with a total fine gold weight of 0.4568 troy ounces. Interestingly, this is the specification which fits the post-1997 50p coins, which are smaller than the original 50p coins. You will receive this collectable coin in its original Royal Mint packaging, complete with a certificate of authenticity. Limited edition presentation of just 310, with our price including free UK delivery.
