In 2012 Her Majesty the Queen celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. The 60th anniversary of her accession was marked with a new, one-year-only Sovereign engraving from The Royal Mint, reinterpreting the classic Saint George and the Dragon motif, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci for the first modern Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns. The dynamic 2012 design is the work of British sculptor Paul Day. It fills the entirety of the reverse field, the date squeezed in beneath the belly of the dragon. This is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Elizabeth II, in use on British money between 1998 and 2015. It’s the fourth official coinage portrait of the Queen. This 2012 Half Sovereign conforms to the same specifications set down centuries ago: its composed of 3.99 grams of 22 carat gold and has a diameter of 19.30 millimetres. This example retains its fine proof finish. Intended for collectors, proof coins have more detail and lustre than their uncirculated counterparts, thanks to multiple strikes of hand-prepared dies. We’re offering this 2012 Half Sovereign in its original presentation box with a numbered certificate of authenticity. Just 2,303 of these gold proof coins were issued in this year.

Gold proof 2012 Half Sovereign with special Diamond Jubilee reverse.

Gold Half Sovereigns

The first Half Sovereigns were minted by the Tudor monarchs. Later, the name was revived for a new gold coin, introduced in 1817 following a major overhaul of British coinage. They were minted for more than a century, only falling out of production and circulation after the First World War.

Half Sovereigns are composed of 3.994 grams of 22 carat gold. They have a diameter of 19.30 and contain .1176 troy ounces of pure gold. Nominally, Half Sovereigns have a value of half a Pound sterling though their precious metal content means they are worth significantly more.

Proof Half Sovereigns began to be minted regularly in the 1980s, joining full Sovereigns as part of the The Royal Mint's most prestigious annual issue. These coins are available in sets and individually, minted in smaller numbers than larger 'full' Sovereigns which makes them particularly collectible.

Diamond Jubilee Reverse

In honour of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, The Royal Mint held a competition to find a special, one-time reverse for the 2012 Sovereign. The winning entry was by the British sculptor, Paul Day. Day's design is a take on Pistruccis' famous Saint George and the dragon scene, used on these coins since 1817.

Day's design fills the field and makes the dragon, snapping at the horses heels, as large as the figure of England's patron saint. The date is squeezed in beneath the beast's belly. It represents an emerging tradition at the Mint for celebrating royal anniversaries with alternate Sovereign designs.

This dynamic engraving is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley's depiction of Her Majesty the Queen. In use between 1998 and 2015, this fourth official effigy shows a greater degree or realism than its idealised predecessors. Broadley's initials - IRB - appear below Elizabeth II's portrait.

Collectible Half Sovereign

Only 2,303 of these gold proof Half Sovereigns were issued individually in 2012.

Sovereigns with alternate reverse designs are always sought after. This limited edition Half Sovereign comes in its original packing from The Royal Mint with its numbered certificate of authenticity.

It's finished to proof standard. Intended for collectors, proof coins have crisp details and high contrast between fields and designs, achieved with multiple strikes of specially prepared dies.
