The first Quintuple Sovereign of the new millennium. 22-carat gold coin from The Royal Mint with a brilliant uncirculated finish. This coin features the instantly recognisable image of Saint George and the dragon to the reverse, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci for the first modern Sovereigns, struck in 1817. This image of England's patron saint has been a perennial presence on these sought-after collectors' coins for the last two centuries. Gold Five Pound coins were authorised in 1817 and while proof examples were produced it was not until 1887 that these large gold coins were issued for circulation. Even now they are a rare issue. Composed of 39.94 grams of 91.67% gold, this 2000 example features a BUnc finish which is typical of recent individual Quintuple Sovereign issues from The Royal Mint. A special 'U' symbol is shown to the left of the date on the obverse to indicate the finish. The obverse shows Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II: the fourth such effigy utilised on Her Majesty's coinage. Just 1,000 of these gold BU Five Sovereigns were issued in the year 2000 and our pre-owned examples are offered in their original presentation packaging from The Royal Mint with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
