NGC graded 1994 gold proof Quintuple Sovereign from The Royal Mint. Just 918 of these large 22-carat gold coins were issued, originally as part of proof Sovereign sets. The reverse displays the instantly recognisable Saint George and the dragon design, showing England's patron saint on horseback, pointing his sword at a winged dragon below. This is the work of Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci, whose initials appear to the right of the date. The obverse displays Raphael Maklouf's elegant effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Five Sovereigns have only been consistently struck since 1980, making the 1994 £5 a key addition to any serious collection of British gold coins.

Classic Saint George Reverse

The reverse of this coin shows the classic Saint George and the dragon design, created by Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci in the early 19th century. The date (1994) is shown below with the artist's initials ('B.P.') to the right.

Struck In 22-Carat Gold

Like all gold Five Sovereigns, this coin is struck in 39.94 grams of solid 22-carat (91.67%) fine gold and measures 36.02 millimetres from milled edge to milled edge. This proof example has been struck with hand-prepared dies.

Low Mintage Five Sovereign

The Royal Mint struck some 918 gold proof Quintuple Sovereigns in 1994. These were all issued as part of 1994 proof Sovereign sets and were not originally available individually. BU Five Sovereigns were also issued in this year with a distinct 'U' mintmark.

NGC Graded British Coin

This Five Sovereign has been authenticated and highly graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company and is supplied sealed in its original holder, which protects the coin from damage and handling.
