1991 gold proof UK Half Sovereign coin, offered in a rare Royal Mint case, issued to celebrate the Rugby World Cup. England hosted the final at Twickenham Stadium and finished as runners up, behind Australia. This premium UK coin was released to mark the occasion (likely before the England team’s defeat!). The case features the words ‘RUGBY WORLD CUP ENGLAND 1991’ to the lid alongside the red rose emblem of the England national team. The silk-lined interior boasts a Royal Mint shield logo to the inside lid. The coin itself is much like other proof Half Sovereigns issued in this year. Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse, crowned with the Diamond Diadem. The reverse shows the classic St George and the dragon motif, created in the early nineteenth century by Italian sculptor Benedetto Pistrucci. The fine finish is protected by a clear capsule. This 1991 Half Sovereign (one of 3,588 minted in this year) conforms to the strict standards these coins are known for. It weighs exactly 3.99 grams and is composed of 22-carat gold (AGW: 3.66 grams or 0.1176 troy ounces). It measures 19.30 millimetres from milled edge to milled edge. We’ll supply this Half Sovereign in its limited edition case with the original certificate of authenticity enclosed.
