Buy a 1990 BU Five Sovereign

Secure a scarce 1990 brilliant uncirculated gold Five Sovereign from The Royal Mint: an important issue for collectors of the Quintuple Sovereign series. This £5 gold coin carries Raphael Maklouf's stately third coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse revives Benedetto Pistrucci's celebrated early 19th-century design of Saint George on horseback slaying the dragon, long associated with the Sovereign tradition. A small circular 'U' mintmark to the left of the date distinguishes this brilliant uncirculated release from the separate proof version issued in 1990 Sovereign sets. Struck in 39.94 grams of 22-carat gold to a crisp BU finish, only 1,226 of these sought-after coins were made available individually. Each pre-owned example is supplied in its original Royal Mint presentation case, complete with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Reverse: St George And Dragon

The reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci's timeless engraving of Saint George astride a rearing horse, plunging his spear into the dragon below. A distinctive 'U' mintmark to the left of the date (1990) identifies the coin as a brilliant uncirculated issue.

Obverse: Raphael Maklouf Portrait

The obverse of this £5 gold coin features Raphael Maklouf's third definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing the Diamond Diadem. The surrounding Latin inscription reads: 'ELIZABETH II DEI · GRA · REG · F · D'.

Specifications: 1990 BU Gold £5

This Quintuple Sovereign is struck to a historic specification of 39.94 grams of 22-carat gold, offering 36.61 grams of pure gold. Measuring 36.02 millimetres in diameter, these coins display the crisp strike and subtle lustre characteristic of a BU finish.

Mintage: 1990 Five Sovereign

The Royal Mint released only 1,226 brilliant uncirculated gold Five Pound coins in 1990, making this one of the scarcer BU issues of the series. A separate proof version without the mintmark was struck exclusively for inclusion in 1990 proof Sovereign sets.
