Royal Mint gold proof Half Sovereign in box of issue with COA. One of 7,074 issued by the UK’s national mint in 1988. The obverse of this proof coin features Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. This is the third definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, used on her British coinage between 1985 and 1997. It shows The Queen facing right, wearing the Diamond Diadem. The reverse features the instantly recognisable image of England’s patron saint, mounted on a rearing horse, depicted in the act of slaying a fearsome dragon. This representation of St George has been a perennial feature on gold Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns since 1817 when these coins were introduced. The design is the work of Italian artist Benedetto Pistrrucci (1783-1855). We’ll supply this Half Sovereign coin in its original Royal Mint presentation case. A clear capsule protects the fine proof finish. Like all modern Half Sovereigns, this one is struck in 3.99 grams of 916.7 (22-carat) gold. That’s an actual gold weight of 3.66 grams or 0.1176 troy ounces. The coin measures 19.30 millimetres from milled edge to milled edge. An excellent addition to your proof Sovereign collection.
