Buy a 1987 BU Five Sovereign

Add a scarce 1987 brilliant uncirculated gold Five Sovereign to your Quintuple Sovereign collection. This premium £5 gold coin stands out as one of only two dates (along with 1988) to show the distinctive 'uncouped' bust of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Raphael Maklouf, which includes Her Majesty's shoulders rather than cropping the effigy at the neck. The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci's timeless Saint George and the dragon design, a historic motif first used on Sovereigns in 1817. A tiny 'U' mintmark to the left of the date identifies this issue as a brilliant uncirculated coin. With just 5,694 examples issued by The Royal Mint in 1987, this Quintuple Sovereign is scarce and sought-after. Each of these pre-owned UK coins is offered in its original Royal Mint presentation case, accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Reverse: St George And The Dragon

The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci's early 19th-century design of Saint George mounted on horseback, spearing a dragon below. A small circular 'U' mintmark appears to the left of the date (1987), identifying this piece as a brilliant uncirculated release.

Obverse: Uncouped Maklouf Bust

The obverse of this 1987 gold £5 coin carries Raphael Maklouf's 'uncouped' third definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, including the monarch's shoulders and the Diamond Diadem. The surrounding Latin legend reads: 'ELIZABETH II DEI · GRA · REG · F · D'.

Specifications: 1987 BU Gold £5

These Quintuple Sovereigns were struck to the long-standing specification of 39.94 grams of 22-carat gold, offering 36.61 grams of pure gold. Each coin measures 36.02 millimetres in diameter and was produced with a brilliant uncirculated finish.

Mintage: 1987 BU Five Sovereigns

The Royal Mint struck just 5,694 brilliant uncirculated gold £5 coins in 1987. No proof Five Sovereigns were issued in this year. This issue is further distinguished by the use of the rare 'uncouped' Maklouf portrait, found only on the 1987 and 1988 Quintuple Sovereigns.
