Struck for the Coronation of King George VI in 1937, this gold proof Quintuple Sovereign is the only Five-Pound coin issued during his reign. It carries the definitive left-facing portrait by Humphrey Paget OBE, while the reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci's timeless image of St George slaying the dragon, shown to magnificent effect on this large 22-carat gold piece. Only 5,501 of these Five Pound coins were produced for the 1937 proof Sovereign sets, making them a notable rarity. This example has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) and is sealed in its holder. An important acquisition for any collector of British gold coins.

Portrait Of King George VI

The obverse features the left-facing uncrowned portrait of King George VI by sculptor Humphrey Paget, used on all British coins issued during his reign. It is inscribed: 'GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP.'.

Classic Saint George Reverse

Benedetto Pistrucci's instantly recognisable image of England's patron saint, St George, slaying a winged dragon from his position on horseback, features on the reverse of this 1937 Five Sovereign with the date displayed below.

Struck In Solid 22-Carat Gold

Though seldom struck before the modern era, historic Five Sovereigns like this one were minted to a strict specification, laid down in 1817. This George VI coin is composed of 39.94 grams of 22-carat gold and has a proof finish.

1937 Gold Proof Sovereign Sets

This coin would, originally, have formed part of one of the 5,501 gold proof Sovereign sets issued in King George VI's Coronation year. The Sovereigns in these sets were the only British gold coins issued during George's reign.

NGC Graded Historic UK Coin

Graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company, this coin is supplied sealed in its holder, which protects the piece from damage and displays a label with a unique reference number which can be checked against NGC's registry.
