High grade King George V Sovereigns struck at the Royal Mint's Melbourne branch in 1926. Melbourne was the second colonial branch mint, opening in 1872 to take advantage of the close proximity of the city to the gold fields in Victoria State. The facility produced gold Sovereigns until 1931, with coinage production at the facility ceasing completely in 1969. Official records show that 211,107 Sovereigns were produced with the 'M' mintmark in this year, however Marsh notes that the 310,156 coins issued in 1927 were all dated '1926'. Naturally, any low mintage figures mean the coin will be highly sought after by collectors. This 1926 Sovereign features Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal's large head portrait of the King on the obverse, with the legend around reading: 'GEORGIVS D. G. BRITT: OMN: REX F. D. IND: IMP:'. The reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci's classic interpretation of the legend of Saint George and the dragon. This design was created in 1817 under the reign of King George III and has become a classic and instantly recognisable engraving. These collectable historic coins from the British Empire are struck in 7.98 grams of 22 carat (0.9167 fine) gold and have a diameter of 22.05 millimetres. Minimum grade: VF - Very Fine or better. References: S 3999. Marsh 244/245.
