Gold Sovereigns, minted in Sydney, Australia in 1918: from an annual issue of 3,716,000 struck at this branch mint in this year. The obverse of these highly collectable coins shows a bare head, left facing portrait of George V by the engraver Edgar Bertram Mackennal, the Australian sculptor and medallist, much admired by King George. George V came to the throne in May 1910 on the death of his father, Edward VII, and was crowned in 1911: the same year his first Sovereigns were issued. While production of gold Sovereigns in England tapered off in 1917, these coins continued to be struck at branch mints in Canada, Australia, India and South Africa after this date. Production would continue at Sydney until 1926. Sydney Sovereigns are identified by a tiny ’S’ mintmark to the ground on the reverse, below the dragon that Saint George is in the middle of slaying from his position on horseback. This depiction of England’s patron saint is the work of Benedetto Pistrucci and was created in 1817 to grace the first modern Sovereigns. The date appears below the motif. Like all 'full' gold Sovereigns, these 1918 S examples are composed of 7.98 grams of 22 carat (91.67% pure) gold, equating to an actual gold weight of 7.32 grams or 0.2354 troy ounces. Diameter: 22.05 millimetres. Edge: milled. Grade: VF - Very Fine or better. References: S 4003, Marsh 278.
