Struck at the outbreak of the First World War, these 1914 gold ‘full’ Sovereigns show a portrait of King George V to the reverse. His reign, which began with the death of his father, Edward VII, in 1910, was coloured by the events of the Great War and its aftermath. He reigned until 1936 and throughout his coinage bore a left-facing, bare-headed portrait by Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal: an Australian sculptor who was favoured by the King. The artist's initials appear to the truncation of George's neck. The reverse of these 1914 coins shows a historic and instantly recognisable engraving by Benedetto Pistrucci, depicting Saint George in the act of slaying a dragon which is crushed by his horses hooves. No mint mark appears on the ground, indicating that these coins were struck at the London branch of the Royal Mint. The St George design was first seen of the earliest modern Sovereigns, issued in 1817, and these coins conforms to the stringent specifications established back then. They're composed of 7.98 grams of 22 carat (91.67% pure) gold, equating to an actual gold weight of 7.32 grams or 0.2354 troy ounces. They measures 22.05 millimetres in diameter and feature a milled edge. Mintage: 11,501,117. Minimum grade: VF - Very Fine. References: M 216, S 3996.
