Collectable gold full Sovereigns of King Edward VII, dated 1908 and minted in Perth, Australia. The obverse features the bare head of the king facing right with initials below for the engraver George William de Saulles. De Saulles died in 1903 but his effigy remained in use on Edward VII’s coins until the king himself passed in 1910. The reverse of this Sovereign shows the traditional image of Saint George, armed with a sword slaying a dragon which is pinned by his horses’ hooves. The work of engraver Benedetto Pistrucci, the design shows a small ‘P’ in the ground beneath the beasts, indicating that this piece was minted in Perth. Founded in 1899, Perth would be the last of the colonial outposts of the Royal Mint established in Australia (after opening branches in Melbourne and Sydney). The mint at Perth would continue striking these gold coins until 1931, producing some 106 million during the time it operated. The coins produced in Perth corresponded to the standard specification established for 'full' Sovereigns in 1817: each is struck in 7.98 grams of 22-carat gold with a diameter of 22.05 millimetres. Annual mintage: 4,875,617. Minimum grade: VF - Very Fine. References: Marsh 201, S. 3972.
