A collectable gold full Sovereign of king Edward the Seventh, dated 1908 and minted in Perth, Australia. The obverse features the bare head of the king facing right with initials below for the engraver George William de Saulles. De Saulles died in 1903 but his effigy remained in use on Edward VII’s coins until the king himself passed in 1910. The reverse of this Sovereign shows the traditional image of Saint George, armed with a sword slaying a dragon which is crushed by his horses’ hooves. The work of engraver Benedetto Pistrucci, the design shows a small ‘P’ in the ground beneath the beasts, indicating that this piece was minted in Perth. This colonial mint was established in 1999. A fine addition to any collection.
