Old Head Victorian Double Sovereign, graded MS 61 by NGC. Obverse: ‘Widowed’ or ‘Veiled Head’ portrait of Queen Victoria, wearing long draping veil over crown, decorations on chest. Legend: ‘VICTORIA · DEI · GRA · BRITT · REGINA · FID · DEF · IND · IMP ·’. This is the final effigy of Victoria to appear on British coinage and is the work of the sculptor and medallist Thomas Brock, known for his large public monuments to Victoria and other British royals. The Old Head was introduced in 1893 - the year this Two Sovereign was struck - and used until the Queen’s death in 1901. Reverse: Benedetto Pistrucci’s Saint George and the dragon, designed for the first modern Sovereigns, issued in 1817 and later adapted for the first Double Sovereign (1820). The engraving shows England’s patron saint mounted on a rearing horse, caught in the act of slaying a dragon which cowers under his steeds hooves. It’s a classic and instantly recognisable design, reintroduced to gold coinage late in the nineteenth century. The date - 1893 - appears below. This Double Sovereign is one of only two types struck during the reign of Victoria. The first was issued in 1887 to mark her Golden Jubilee. This second example was minted with the first issue of Brock’s new portrait. Weight: 15.98 grams. Diameter: 28.40 millimetres. Edge: milled. Grade: independently graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company as MS 61. NGC certification number: 6320542-013.
