Graded Mint State by NGC, this impressive 1887 gold Five Sovereign - also known as the Quintuple Sovereign - was issued in the year of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Struck in 22-carat gold, this large coin is one of the most desirable issues of the Victorian era. The obverse displays Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm's new Jubilee Head portrait, showing the ageing monarch wearing the Small Diamond Crown over a lace veil. The reverse revives Benedetto Pistrucci's timeless engraving of Saint George slaying the dragon, a design created for the first modern Sovereigns in 1817. With a recorded mintage of 53,844 pieces, this coin combines prestige with enduring historical appeal and is presented sealed in its NGC holder.

Queen Victoria Jubilee Head

The obverse displays Joseph Edgar Boehm's Jubilee Head bust of Queen Victoria, surrounded by the Latin inscription 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:'. Though divisive at the time, this portrait is appreciated by today's collectors.

Pistrucci's Saint George Reverse

The reverse of this Five Pound features Saint George on horseback in combat with a dragon, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci and completed with the date 1887 below. The artist's initials 'B.P.' appear to the right.

22-Carat Gold Five Pound

Produced at the Royal Mint in London, these impressive Five Sovereign coins were originally struck in 39.9 grams of solid 22-carat gold. Measuring 36 millimetres across, the coin boasts a finely milled edge.

1887 Gold £5 Mintage Figures

Official records show that 53,844 circulation-issue Quintuple Sovereigns were produced in 1887, together with a small number of proofs (just 797 pieces). Surviving examples in mint state condition remain desirable today.
